Description
A rich, cozy winter drink made by toasting marshmallows to create a caramelized flavor, then melting them into dark chocolate milk and topping with homemade cinnamon whipped cream.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups whole milk
- 6 oz high-quality dark chocolate (60-70%), chopped
- 1 cup large marshmallows
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp sugar (optional)
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Chop the dark chocolate into small pieces and set aside.
- Pour milk into a heavy-bottomed saucepan and heat over medium-low heat until it reaches a gentle simmer.
- Add the chopped chocolate and salt to the warm milk, whisking constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
- Remove the pot from heat.
- Preheat oven broiler to high. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
- Spread marshmallows in a single layer on the baking sheet.
- Broil marshmallows for 2-4 minutes, watching closely, until golden brown and puffed. Rotate halfway through.
- Pour the hot chocolate milk over the toasted marshmallows in the saucepan.
- Let sit for 30 seconds, then gently stir until the marshmallows are melted and the mixture is creamy.
- Taste and add sugar if desired.
- In a cold bowl, whip the heavy cream with cinnamon (and optional sugar) until soft peaks form.
- Pour hot chocolate into mugs and top with a generous dollop of cinnamon whipped cream.
Notes
Do not skip the salt as it enhances the chocolate flavor. Toasting marshmallows separately prevents the milk from becoming grainy. Keep the cream and bowl cold for best whipping results. This recipe does not freeze well.
