Description
These homemade pigs in a blanket feature buttery, flaky puff pastry wrapped around cocktail wieners or smoked sausages, baked to golden perfection and served with a tangy, sweet honey mustard dip. They are easy to make, make-ahead friendly, and perfect for any party.
Ingredients
- 2 sheets puff pastry, frozen and thawed
- 40–50 cocktail wieners or smoked sausage links cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds or sesame seeds
- ½ cup Dijon mustard
- ¼ cup yellow mustard
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Unroll thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface and cut each sheet into 12 equal squares (approx. 3×3 inches).
- Place a cocktail wiener or sausage piece in the center of each pastry square. Fold corners over the meat to wrap it snugly, pinching seams shut. Place seam-side down on baking sheets, leaving 1 inch between each.
- Whisk egg and water together. Brush the top of each wrapped sausage generously with the egg wash.
- Sprinkle poppy seeds or sesame seeds over the wet egg wash, pressing gently to adhere.
- Bake for 15-18 minutes, rotating pans halfway through, until pastry is puffed, golden brown, and flaky.
- While baking, whisk together Dijon mustard, yellow mustard, honey, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, and black pepper to make the dip.
- Let pigs in a blanket cool for 2-3 minutes before serving warm with the honey mustard dip.
Notes
Keep the pastry cold to ensure flaky layers. If using raw sausages, par-cook them by boiling for 5 minutes first. These can be assembled and frozen unbaked; bake from frozen adding 5-7 minutes to cook time. The honey mustard dip tastes better after sitting for 10 minutes.
