  • Author: Rebecca
  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

A comforting, low-effort dessert perfect for self-care, featuring firm-baking apples tossed in cinnamon and topped with a crunchy oat streusel.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large firm-baking apples (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), approx. 2.5 lbs
  • 1.5 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 0.75 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (for tossing apples)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (for tossing apples)
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar (for tossing apples)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • Optional: 1 tsp whole cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Wash, core, and slice apples into 1/4-inch thick wedges.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, toss apple slices with 1 tbsp flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, and 2 tbsp brown sugar until evenly coated.
  4. Pour spiced apples into a 9×9 inch baking dish and spread into an even layer.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine oats, 0.5 cup flour, 0.75 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
  6. Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a fork or fingers until the mixture is crumbly with some larger clumps.
  7. Sprinkle the oat streusel evenly over the apples.
  8. Bake for 40-45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and apple juices are bubbling around the edges.
  9. If topping browns too quickly, tent loosely with aluminum foil.
  10. Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow juices to set.
  11. Serve warm, optionally topped with whipped cream, ice cream, or a splash of milk.

Notes

Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith to prevent mushiness. Ensure butter is cold for a crunchy topping. Do not freeze as apples release water upon thawing. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in oven at 350°F to restore crunch.
