Description
A sophisticated yet simple homemade Old Fashioned cocktail featuring bourbon or rye whiskey, real sugar, Angostura bitters, and orange bitters for a complex, aromatic drink.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ounces Bourbon or Rye Whiskey
- 1 sugar cube or ½ teaspoon granulated sugar (or demerara sugar)
- 2–3 dashes Angostura bitters
- 2 dashes Orange bitters
- 1 large ice cube or a few standard ice cubes
- 1 strip Orange peel (for garnish)
- 1 brandied cherry or maraschino cherry (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Place ice in an Old Fashioned glass to chill it.
- Place the sugar cube (or granulated sugar) into the bottom of the glass.
- Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters and 2 dashes of orange bitters.
- If using a sugar cube, add a splash of water (about 1 teaspoon) to help it dissolve.
- Use a muddler to crush the sugar into the bitters until a thick paste or syrupy consistency forms.
- Pour 2 ounces of bourbon or rye whiskey into the glass.
- Stir gently with a bar spoon for 10-15 seconds to chill and dilute slightly.
- Hold an orange peel strip skin-side down over the glass and pinch to express oils over the drink.
- Rub the peel around the rim of the glass and drop it into the drink.
- Garnish with a cherry, give one final gentle stir, and serve immediately.
Notes
Do not shake the drink; stirring keeps it clear and silky. Use large ice cubes to prevent rapid dilution. If using honey instead of sugar, warm it slightly to help it mix. This drink is best served immediately.
